Title A name given to the resource Washington Monument Description An account of the resource The Washington Monument is the only actual monument on the National Mall because Washington was alive when it <a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/280">began to be planned</a>. All others on the Mall are memorials, created after the person being remembered has died. <a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/196">Begun in 1848,</a> construction of the monument was <a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/148">interrupted in 1854</a>. Political and social events deferred construction <a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/281">until 1877</a>, and the monument was finally <a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/282">completed in 1884</a>.
