Designed in the French Second Empire architectural style, this massive granite building originally housed the <a href="http://mallhistory.org/items/show/476">State Department, War Department, and the Department of the Navy</a>. The building took 17 years to complete. It was the largest office building in the US when it opened with 553 rooms.
